Field Studies in Radical Mycography

A series of mycelial workshops commissioned by Art Walk Projects and formed part of their Climate Cafe series supported by Postcode Lottery and Awards for All.

Co-curated by artist Johanna Koen & researcher Oona Dooley from Myceliart.

Featuring facilitation by and Ruby Scott-Geddes, as well as Edinburgh’s community mushroom farm Rhyze Mushrooms.

Mycography involves the artistic documentation of fungi, which can include techniques like drawing, recording, and other imaginative forms of detailed description. Participants engaged in beginner mushroom identification, illustration crafts, and cultivation activities.

We brought together artists, foragers, gardeners and mycologists to map our social, political, and personal connections with fungi in Edinburgh. Workshops took place in and around Craigmillar, Portobello, Newhailes and Lochend.

The walks & workshops contributed to a collectively shaped chronicle of contemporary connections with local fungi. Collective notes, drawings, photographs and reflections were complied into a booklet, which was published as a riso-printed zine and exhibited at the Art Walk Porty Hub in September 2024.
